(KPL) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in cooperation with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) on Thursday held a national level workshop on migration and cooperation between the Lao PDR and IOM.
Present at the seminar included Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Khamphao Ernthavanh, Deputy Director General of IOM Laura Thomson, and UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative to the Lao PDR Kaarina Immonen.
The seminar, the first of its kind since the Lao PDR joined IOM as a member in late June 2017, aimed to enrich the awareness and understanding of migration among relevant government officials.
Discussion at the workshop also focused on the association between migration and the implementation of the 8th five-year socio-economic development of the Lao PDR and the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and draft Global Compact for safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.
The workshop constituted a landmark for the cooperation for years to come between the Lao PDR and the IOM Laos and other development partners to ensure support will continue to be given to the Lao government in areas, especially on capacity building for government officials and officers concerned, helping victims of human trafficking, transnational migration, immigration and border control, migrant health, response and assistance in disaster situations.
