AsiaKabul ‘regrets’ US decision to label Afghanistan as ‘state sponsor of wrongful detention’

KABUL – The Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday described the United States’ recent decision to label as a “state sponsor of wrongful detention” as regrettable, emphasizing that no foreign nationals have been held for political leverage or deals.

In an official statement, the ministry clarified that certain individuals have been detained solely on charges of violating Afghan laws, with many released through standard legal processes upon completion of investigations.

The statement highlighted that over the past year, Afghanistan has made goodwill gestures in handling cases involving some detained US nationals, demonstrating positive steps toward resolution. Discussions between Afghan and US officials have taken place at various levels, facilitated by Qatar, according to the ministry.

During these talks, both sides have committed to undertaking several constructive measures to address mutual concerns. The Afghan government expressed its desire for the issue to be resolved amicably through continued dialogue and engagement, underscoring a commitment to fostering improved bilateral relations.

The United States has formally designated Afghanistan a “state sponsor of wrongful detention,” US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Monday.
