WorldMexico not to accept any form of subordination, says president

MEXICO CITY – Mexico will maintain a foreign policy based on equality and sovereignty, said President Claudia Sheinbaum on Tuesday, rejecting any form of subordination to other nations, including the United States.

At a morning press conference, Sheinbaum said that Mexico and the United States coordinate and collaborate on security issues, but it is also important for Mexicans to “remember our history and what independence and sovereignty mean.”

Regarding the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) on free trade, Sheinbaum voiced confidence that it will have a positive impact on the country.

“It is moving forward, and it will benefit Mexicans,” she said, acknowledging there are issues to resolve, such as the application of tariffs.

“We are a sovereign nation, that is extremely important,” she said, following a phone call with US President Donald Trump on Monday, the eighth such call between them since November 2024.

The phone conversation took place amid tensions over trade, security and the fight against drug trafficking, with Mexico’s government insisting on prioritizing mutual respect and sovereignty as fundamental pillars of its foreign policy.
