WorldMultiple avalanches leave 4 dead in northern Italy

MILAN – Multiple avalanches struck the northern Italian Alps on Saturday, leaving four people dead and several others injured, local media reported.

According to Italy’s Rai News, a large avalanche occurred around midday in Val di Fiemme, involving four ski mountaineers. One was buried and killed, another sustained serious injuries, while the remaining two managed to escape unharmed.

In the Valtellina area, another avalanche buried three skiers, resulting in two deaths. The third skier survived but remained in critical condition.

Later in the afternoon, a further avalanche in the Marmolada mountains claimed another life.

Local rescue teams conducted search and recovery operations using helicopters, rescue dogs and avalanche transceivers.

Italian authorities have warned that avalanche risks across the Alpine region remain extremely high. They urged people traveling to the area to closely monitor avalanche forecasts and avoid high-risk zones.
