Official: ROK considers restoring military agreement with DPRK

AsiaOfficial: ROK considers restoring military agreement with DPRK

SEOUL – is reviewing whether to restore the suspended Sept 19 military agreement with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), said national security chief Wi Sung-lac on Wednesday.

Restoring the agreement is the ROK government’s “basic direction” and a guideline set by the president, said Wi, quoted by Yonhap News Agency.

No final conclusion has been made as related discussions are ongoing, he said.

The agreement was signed by defense chiefs of the two sides during the 2018 inter-Korean summit to stop all hostile acts across the border, but it was fully suspended in 2024.

In 2025, the ROK President Lee Jae-myung said in his Liberation Day speech that the government would take gradual steps to restore the Sept 19 military agreement to prevent accidental clashes and build military trust.
