WorldPeru defense, foreign ministers quit over dispute on US fighter jet purchase

LIMA – Peru’s Defense Minister Carlos Diaz and Foreign Minister Hugo de Zela resigned on Wednesday after a dispute over the government’s decision to delay the purchase of US-made .

The resignations followed President Jose Balcazar’s move to postpone the deal, citing concerns over public spending and leaving the decision to the next administration.

Local media reported that both officials opposed the delay. De Zela said postponing the purchase could harm Peru’s credibility in negotiations, while Diaz described the acquisition as a matter of national security.

Balcazar said that the delay was intended to ensure the proper use of public funds and that Peru does not seek confrontation with the United States.

The decision comes amid a political transition in Peru, where a new president is expected to take office in July following ongoing election processes.
